Conan Exiles has a variety of animals that can be captured and tamed using an Animal Pen before becoming your pet. From horses to cats, bears, and elephants, you can turn a piece of land into a petting zoo or have them accompany you on your adventures.

Perhaps the strangest animal you can have as a pet is a rat, but doing so requires the Ratchcatcher’s Whistle, and if you’re asking how to get the Ratchcatcher’s Whistle, you need to wonder no more. As mentioned before, the Age of Sorcery Chapter 3 update did a massive overhaul of the Journey system, making it more attractive for new and returning players to complete. Not only are the Journey steps more defined, but it provides a tutorial on achieving each step and granting you rewards for completing them.

The Beast Master Journey received some rework as you can now acquire a peculiar item to tame a specific animal to become your pet: a rat. Vile and unhygienic they may be, you can form an “unbreakable bond” with a rat; however, you will need to acquire an important item, the Ratcatcher’s Whistle.

Within the Journey tab, find the Beast Master Journey, which will only unlock after completing the Thrall Taker Journey to get the Purple Lotus Orb. Once the Beast Master Journey is unlocked, activate it to start completing their steps, which we’ve listed below:

1. Unlock the Apprentice Tamer Knowledge
2. Craft and install an Animal Pen
3. Have captured a baby animal
4. Raise the animal in the Animal Pen
5. Place the pet
6. Feed the pet
7. Give the pet an instruction
8. Start leveling up the pet

Once all the steps are completed, you receive the Ratcatcher's Whistle as a reward, described in-game as “a whistle to call rats.” You’ll also receive Shadebloom as the additional reward from this Journey, which can be used to increase the chance of the pet growing larger and stronger.

Crafting this unique item requires five Plant Fibers, two pieces of Wood, and Putrid Meat to gain one Ratcatcher's Whistle. Add this item to your Inventory and use it to attract a rat and form a bond with the animal, becoming your pet until it dies, but you can’t give a rat instructions nor feed it.
