Polish developer CD Projekt RED first announced "Project Orion" in October 2022, and there hasn't been much information about this project other than it being a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. Additionally, the core team that had worked on Cyberpunk 2077 moved to the United States to work on "Project Orion," which also helped establish the developer's American branch.

Recently, there has been a new development regarding "Project Orion," which the developer announced during its latest financial results. The latest financial results also saw the developer confirm (and post to social media) that Cyberpunk 2077 had sold 10 million copies since its release in December 2020.

CD Projekt RED confirmed that "Project Orion," the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, is now in pre-production, and they shared the news on the official CDPR Investor Relations social media accounts on 28th May 2025. This latest announcement excited fans of the Cyberpunk series, as many were awaiting news or updates regarding "Project Orion," but provided no estimated period for when the sequel will fully enter production.

In an official statement, the studio stated: "Several weeks ago, the CD Projekt RED team responsible for the next big game set in the Cyberpunk universe completed the project’s conceptual phase. As a result, Cyberpunk 2 – previously known under the codename Project Orion – has progressed to pre-production."

The developer also shared a new update regarding its development teams currently "engaged" with ongoing projects, with a vast majority working on the upcoming Witcher sequel, The Witcher 4, which added an additional 11 staffers, going from a team of 411 to 422 as of April 2025. The same can be said for the Cyberpunk sequel, which also added 12 more staffers to join the team, increasing its team size from 84 to 96, as the project just entered pre-production.
