Cloud9 Announce New Funding from Sports Investors

North American fan favourites Cloud9 yesterday announced a new round of funding for their organization, and the list of investors has quite a few familiar faces. Daniel Fiden of FunPlus Ventures is leading the investment, which includes 21 members in total. The group includes:

  • Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian
  • NFL Hall of Famer Joe Montana
  • San Francisco Giants Baseball player Hunter pence
  • Tesla directors Antonio Gracias and Kimbal Musk
  • Cleveland Cavs Basketball player Andrew Bogut

“Growing up, I wanted to own an NFL team. Now, the obvious move is to invest in an esports franchise and I'm thrilled it's Cloud9,” said Alexis Ohanian. “Jack Etienne has done an impressive job building a world class organization. He's thinking long-term, regularly engaging with his fanbase, and continuing to lead Cloud9 toward a bright future." “Cloud9 is a fantastic organization that has shown throughout the years that it has what it takes to continuously contend for championships in multiple esports titles,” said Joe Montana. The funding indicates that Cloud9 may be looking to battle for a spot in the upcoming Overwatch League, which has been reportedly valued at upwards of $30 million for a spot. Either way, the additional funding could allow for Cloud9 to set their eyes on global domination, not just the U.S.
