Guild Wars 2 World Championship Has Biggest Prize Fund Yet

MMOs might not be the first genre when you think of eSports, but Guild Wars 2 developer ArenaNet is continuing to bring its game into the world of competitive gaming. Season 2 of the Pro League - an official tournament arranged by both ArenaNet and ESL - will soon mark the close of the 2016 season, leading onto the newly announced Guild Wars 2 World Championship. Pro Guild Wars 2 teams will compete with one another for the prize fund of $200,000, the largest for Guild Wars 2 to date. The grand finals winner will earn $100,000 of the kitty. "After four years of updates and countless rounds of player-versus-player combat, we’re very excited to announce the Guild Wars 2 World Championship,” said Guild Wars 2's associate global brand manager for competitive gaming Joshua Davis in a press release. "Working closely with the Guild Wars 2 community and our partner ESL, the Guild Wars 2 World Championships and the ongoing Guild Wars 2 Pro League events demonstrate ArenaNet’s commitment to competitive play." The World Championship finals will take play on 17 September 2016, with the finals of the ESL Pro League Season 2 this weekend deciding which six pros from both regions will make it into the qualifying round. There's set to be one regional qualifier per region, the top three teams of each making it into the Guild Wars 2 World Championship finals. The pro teams to be duking it out against one another in the ESL Pro League Season 2 this weekend - on the 25 June - are Rank Fifty Five Dragons and The Civilized Gentlemen from Europe and Astral Authority and Team PZ for America, though we'd understand if you don't really know them. Guild Wars 2 hasn't exactly been a well-known or often considered eSport, but with the large prize fund for the Guild Wars 2 World Championship perhaps now is the time to take a look into competitive PvP.
