Rockstar Games has finally broken the silence when it comes to the next GTA game, vaguely stating that the new GTA game is in development.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is probably the most anticipated game of this generation, despite never being officially announced.

Well, that has changed, as Rockstar Games, the renowned studio behind the cult-classic series, has just confirmed that "a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series" is officially in development.

This has come after years of rumours and speculation regarding GTA 6, from the potential main characters, locations, gameplay mechanics, soundtrack, to practically every other aspect of the game.

In a short tweet posted today (4th February), Rockstar Games confirmed, for the first time, that they are actively working on a new Grand Theft Auto game.

Rockstar acknowledged the immense interest that gamers have in the game. Furthermore, the developers noted the challenging task to live up to expectations and standards established by GTA 5, which is one the best-selling games of all time and regarded as a masterpiece of the action-adventure genre.

"Many of you have been asking about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series," Rockstar wrote. "With every new project, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we've previously delivered. We're pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the series is underway."

While this is the first official confirmation that a new GTA game is indeed in development, some parts of this statement are rather vague. For example, "active development" doesn't reveal what stage of development they are currently in, such as preproduction or full production.

Last year's rumours about GTA 6 being in development hell sparked doubts about the state of affairs in Rockstar, and many believe that Dan Houser's resignation was also a sign of trouble. Houser was one of the co-founders of Rockstar and lead writer on all Grand Theft Auto games.

Nonetheless, this is definitely good news for the fans of the series, and Rockstar promised that there would be more information.

"We look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready, so please stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire for official details," they added in a follow-up tweet. "On behalf of our entire team, we thank you all for your support and cannot wait to step into the future with you!"

GTA 5 was released in September 2013 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Since then, it has been ported to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in November 2014 and in April 2015 to PC. The next-gen version for the PS5 and  Xbox Series X/S is expected to be released in 2022.
