Most popular gaming platforms have an incentive, rewards, or loyalty program that allows their player base to earn and accumulate points and redeem them for unique rewards like exclusive items and other notable digital collectibles. Sony launched a loyalty program for the PlayStation platform, PlayStation Stars, in which players can earn points by playing games and other related activities and redeem the points for a myriad of digital items like games, add-ons, in-game currencies, PSN wallet funds, and more.

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) made a huge announcement regarding the future of this loyalty program, which abruptly saw the end of PlayStation Stars for the time being. It's worth noting that PlayStation Stars is a fairly new loyalty program compared to Nintendo's My Rewards program and the Rewards with Xbox, which forms part of the Microsoft Rewards program.

The official announcement was shared on the PlayStation social media accounts, linking to a PlayStation (PS) Blog post from Network Advertising, Loyalty & Licensed Merchandise VP Grace Chen on 21st May 2025. Chen stated that since the launch of PlayStation Stars in 2022, the team has "learned a lot from evaluating the types of activities our players respond best to, and as a company, we are always evolving with player and industry trends."

"Through this evaluation, we have decided to refocus our efforts and will be winding down the current version of PlayStation Stars. We will continue to evaluate our key findings from this program and are looking into ways to build upon these learnings," Chen added.

As for when SIE will cease the PlayStation Stars program, this version of PlayStation Stars will officially end on 2nd November 2026, in which existing members can still redeem points against various digital items under the condition that these points don't expire before the aforementioned date. As such, members can still earn points and digital items, plus leveling their status until 23rd July 2025 at 7:59 am PDT / 10:59 am EDT / 3:59 pm BST / 11:59 pm JST, of which no new campaigns or missions will be available, and no status benefits and rewards to earn and claim.

Some changes will come into effect before the November 2026 cut-off date, including no longer accepting new members or sign-ups for the current version of the loyalty program as of 21st May 2025. However, Chen added that should Stars members opt to cancel their membership as of 21st May 2025, "it will not be possible to rejoin this version of the program, and members will lose all earned Points."

Lastly, Chen stated that "PlayStation Stars members can still access their Digital Collectibles" once these changes have come into effect, in which the team will look to finding new and exciting ways "to evolve our loyalty program efforts for the future." As for what the evolution could possibly entail, they have committed to providing updates, as there may be a possibility that PlayStation Stars or some variation of this loyalty program could relaunch in the future.
