The first thing you have to do in order to change a Pokémon's Tera type is beat Normal-type Gym Leader Larry in Medali City. After that, you will be able to visit the Treasure Eatery and speak with the chef behind the counter, who will offer to change your Pokemon's Tera type.

However, it's not as simple as just asking the chef. He will charge 50 Tera Shards every time you want to change your Pokémon's Tera type. Additionally, these 50 Tera Shards are type-specific, meaning that if you want to give your Pokémon a Tera Fairy type, you will need 50 Tera Fairy Shards.

Tera Shards can be found all over the Paldea region. The first way to obtain Ter Shards is by challenging 3 Star and higher Raids. The Tera Shards you obtain will correspond to the type of Raid Den you challenge. For example, if you challenge a 3 Star Tera Fire-type Eevee Raid, the Tera Shards you obtain will be Fire Tera Shards and not Normal Tera Shards. Here is a breakdown of the Tera Shards you can obtain for challenging Raids:

  • 3 Star Raid: 2 Tera Shards
  • 4 Star Raid: 3 Tera Shards
  • 5 Star Raid: 4 Tera Shards
  • 6 Star Raid: 6 Tera Shards

Alternatively, Tera Shards can be found in the overworld. Usually, the Tera Shards you obtain will correspond to the area you are in (Ice Ter Shards are primarily found on Glaseado Mountain, for example). However, this is not always the case, so you better start searching!

The last method to obtain Tera Shards is via your school. You can obtain Tera Shards by winning the Academy Ace Tournament. Additionally, Tyme, the math teacher, will give you 50 Rock Tera Shards if you finish all her classes and complete her story arc afterward.
