Throughout the years of Pokemon, players have always had the ability to nickname their Pokemon. Players nickname their Pokemon for many different reasons, but at the end of the day in Scarlet and Violet, you can always change the nickname of the Pokemon you caught. But what about Pokemon that was traded to you?

Unfortunately, you cannot change the nickname of the Pokemon that was traded to you. The nickname is something another player gave to that Pokemon. Like the Original Trainer indicator, you cannot change the nickname of a Pokemon that was traded to you if it already has a nickname.

You can trade Pokemon in a couple of different ways in Scarlet and Violet. You can trade Pokemon directly with another player or in-game trainer, and you can Wonder Trade. No matter the method, you cannot rename Pokemon that have been given a nickname by somebody else in Scarlet and Violet. But what if they do not have a nickname already?

If you receive a Pokemon without a nickname via a trade, you can rename it once. So if you get a Pikachu named Pikachu, and you rename it to Sparky, you cannot change that name. Even though you are the one who gave it that nickname, you cannot rename that Pokemon. All other Pokemon you catch can be renamed at any time.
