How to catch Scyther in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Scyther is a beloved Pokémon and has made a return in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.
How to catch Scyther in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

From the original 151 Pokémon, several have made a return in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Among the original mons, Scyther is one of the most popular. The winged and bladed bug has been a fan-favourite for generations and was only made more popular back in Generation II when Game Freak awarded it a secondary evolution.

That evolution, Scizor, has become just as popular as Scyther, being a rare Bug and Steel-type Pokémon. However, before players can think about acquiring Scizor in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, they’ll need to catch Scyther first. The guide below shows players exactly how they can do so with the Sinnoh remakes.

Currently, the only location to find a Scyther in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl is in the Grand Underground. You gain access to the area upon arriving in Eterna City and speaking to the man next to the Pokémon Center. He will give you the Explorer’s Kit and you can burrow underground and explore the new area. Also, Scyther is an exclusive Pokémon to Brilliant Diamond, so Shining Pearl players are out of luck for now.

In the underground, you’ll want to start heading into caves, which are marked on the map as large areas with question marks on them. You’re looking for the following caves that can hold Scyther:

  • Grassland Cave
  • Big Bluff Cavern
  • Riverbank Cave
  • Still-Water Cavern

We were able to find ours in a Grassland Cave but any of the four will do. The Scyther you find in the caves will be matched to your level so you need to come prepared with Poké Balls and possibly some Potions to stay alive since underground Pokémon are more difficult to catch.

Once you’ve caught your Scyther, you can choose to evolve it into Scizor by using a Metal Coat. You need to give the item to Scyther and then trade it to another player or yourself with another console. This will evolve Scyther into Scizor and you have yourself a powerful Pokémon for the rest of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.
