How do you Become a Good Sniper in Squad?

The sniping role offers the most formidable Squad experience, pumping enemies with fear and your comrades with confidence as you slowly eliminate enemies, one by one. Understanding the mechanics of the rifle is a separate skill from understanding the mannerisms of a sniper, most players will typically load into a map, empty their magazines (despite being a sniper), and get destroyed by an enemy LMG or BMP. However, sniping is about discipline, we're not shooting at anything with a heartbeat, we wait for the right moment, take it and relocate.

The values of sniping are as follows:

  • Ensuring your team is constantly safe - you're the eyes of the Squad
  • Providing constant overwatch and communication to your Squad
  • Giving possible advice/strategies to your Squad leader based on your views
  • Providing observation on enemy movement, communicating to team, without engagement
  • Patience - sitting idle in a single location for up to thirty minutes
  • Excellent decision-making - will your actions jeopardize your Squad?

Most people picture the American Sniper experience, taking out bad guys left and right, killing the enemies, and saving the day. However, snipers engage the target most professionally, shooting one-three shots quickly, then relocating to avoid being compromised. Squad provides an ultra-realistic experience in terms of the battlefield environment, therefore, sitting on a hill taking out entire Squads of nine every ten minutes isn't a regular occurrence.

Squad: How To Play The Sniper Role

Sniping within Squad is all about obtaining data on the enemies before engaging them, the sniper can see and know all. Revealing enemy locations, strategies, strongholds, and overall activity, meaning Snipers are quite literally the eyes of the team. Like LMG and infantry, the sniper has their acronym, known as DOPE:

  • Data
  • On
  • Previous
  • Engagement

This acronym provides a helpful tool for snipers, it allows you to evaluate the nature of your previous engagement and evaluate whether or not you're still in danger and what the future withholds. For example, you've just concluded an engagement, killing a medic, anti-tank, and two riflemen. Now, evaluate the data - where did they come from, what was their ambition, who engaged first, and were they aware of the upcoming conflict? All these pieces of information will help you understand the nature of the next possible engagement, if they weren't taken by surprise and appeared on edge, chances are there's another enemy Squad heading your way.

Once concluding an engagement please:

  • Communicate relocation with the Squad leader and team
  • Relocate a new concealed and beneficial position
  • Provide information on the previous engagement - bodies, roles, behaviors

Then follow the commands of your Squad leader, remembering that in fact winning the game and securing the lives of your team is your main ambition and priority.
