To start off as a prospective Space Pirate in Starfield, your first choices come from the character creation system. Here, you will have to pick from various unique Starfield Backgrounds and Traits after you've completed your character's look.

First off, the Background. Here, you have two choices, in our opinion. Firstly, there's the Cyber Runner Background, which starts you off with the basic skills of Stealth, Security, and Theft. However, Space Pirates aren't really all that stealthy, right, and this Background is likely better for someone who wants to play a Hacker.

To this end, we suggest the Gangster Background to set you off on the "right" path as a Starfield Space Pirate. The Gangster Background includes the following starter skills:

  • Shotgun Certification
  • Boxing
  • Theft

An official description of the Gangster Background reads:

You were always disgusted by suckers killing themselves to make an "honest wage." As soon as you were old enough to hold a weapon, you took what you wanted from anyone unlucky enough to have it.

With this background, you can become a feared Space Pirate, leaving bodies filled with shotgun shells in your wake. From here, we suggest branding out in the Social tree for Scavenging and Intimidation skills first. Remember to also get your Rifle Certification in the Advanced portion of the Combat tree, and focus on your favorite weapon. As a Space Pirate, there's going to be a lot of combat!

Best Starfield Space Pirate Traits

As the final part of the character creation process, you will be able to choose up to three Traits. It is, however, important to note that each Trait has a disadvantage and an advantage. Furthermore, you do not have to choose any Traits at all. We suggest the following Traits to start out as a Space Pirate in Starfield:

  • Dream Home: You own a luxurious, customizable house on a peaceful planet! Unfortunately, it comes with a 125,000 credit mortgage with GalBank that has to be paid weekly.
  • Spaced: Your body has become acclimated to space. Health and endurance are increased when in space but decreased when on the surface.

We chose the Dream Home Trait so you can store all your loot on a peaceful planet, and the 125,000 credit mortgage isn't that bad since you will be selling a lot of stolen loot anyway! We also went with Spaced since you will be a Space Pirate, boarding ships and taking down enemies in space...

If you can stomach his unstoppable annoying banter, then you can go for the Adoring Fan (Hero Worshipped Trait) as well since he provides you with gifts, and the only negative is his incessant jabber.

Keep in mind that this is just an early starter build helping you through the first few hours and your choices in the Starfield character creator. You should always pick skills that will help further increase the effectiveness of your play style.
