Valorant to receive rank name change, increased incentives at higher ranks

As the Valorant closed beta draws to a close, leaving players waiting until 2nd June to play it again when it officially launches, those that have enjoyed playing the game can take some comfort knowing that the Riot devs are hard at work on new content and fixes to the game before the big day.

And thanks to an interview between Valorant's senior designer Sean Szopinski and Polygon we now have confirmation that Riot plans to change the name of the much-maligned top rank - Valorant.

Players have found the current choice of "Valorant" confusing and a bit of damp squib, and this is a criticism that the devs have taken to heart.

"When we were brainstorming these names, Valorant seemed like a really awesome choice for the top rank," Szopinski said. “What could be cooler than climbing the ranks, aspiring to become an elite and heroic Valorant, the personification of the game itself! You guys are right though, it’s a bit confusing. We get it. I get it. We’ll change it for launch.”

There are currently eight ranks, from Iron to Valorant, each with three tiers.

This would not be the first time since Valorant's ranks have recieved a name change as a leak in the early weeks of the closed beta showed a ranking system with names such as Mercenary instead of Iron, Soldier instead of Bronze, and Veteran instead of Silver.

While there has been no word yet on what the new rank will be called they also have plans to add extra length and excitement to the top rank with the introduction of a "specific rating" for top players, meaning it will be possible to know who is the highest-ranked player in the whole game.

"This is something that we have discussed a lot and will eventually be part of Valorant’s Competitive Ecosystem"

This would not be the first time since Valorant's ranked received a name change as a leak during before the start of the closed beta showed

Valorant is set to launch on 2nd June, with the ranked mode expected to be activated within a couple of weeks from launch.
