Next-Generation RE Engine Currently In The Works, Capcom Confirms

During the currently ongoing RE: 2023 conference, Capcom confirmed that a brand new engine is in development, planned to be the successor to the currently-in-use RE Engine, along with revealing a few minor details about the engine itself.

The engine is currently codenamed REX Engine, standing for RE neXt Engine. According to Tomofumi Ishida, programmer of the Engine, the need for a new engine is all about hoping to use larger asset sizes. Capcom also wants to meet the demands of a next-generation system and allow a greater degree of customizability and a wider range of options in any title that is developed using the REX Engine.

While it's currently unclear what the first title developed using this new engine will be, it's more than likely going to be a future Resident Evil game that leads the charge, although the Engine may be too early in development to be used on a potentially forthcoming Resident Evil 5 Remake. What's likely is that a few last-gasp games are developed using the RE Engine before Capcom moves everybody who is developing a game in-house over to using the new REX Engine for series such as Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and perhaps even Devil May Cry.
