Upgrade PS4 games to PS5 free: All compatible games, enhancements, save transfer, and more

A look at all the titles that can be upgraded for free from PS4 to PS5 including how to transfer progress and what new features can be expected.

Did you hear the news? Next-gen console gaming is going to be a little more consumer friendly this time round, with both the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 allowing gamers to upgrade their game if they own it on the previous generation.

So for example if you pruchased a Plastation 4 version of FIFA 21 in October, and are lucky enough to get a PS5 at Christmas you can upgrade the game to the PS5 for absolutely free.

This isn’t the same as backwards compatibility, which both consoles support to varying degrees, this is a complete upgrade to a next-gen version of the game with support for all the graphical bells and whistles that the new consoles offer.

How this upgrade works, and what progression (save games, unlocks, etc) you can take over, is different for every title so to give you a helping hand and save you a potentially costly mistake we have put together a guide of all the games that you can upgrade for free from PS4 to PS5.

We will also detail how the versions differ and what, if any, progression is kept when you upgrade.

How do I upgrade my games from PS4 to PS5?

Upgrading your games is easy and for the most part involves you signing into your PSN account on your PlayStation 5 and heading to the PSN Store and downloading the next-gen version.

If you have a physical copy of a game on PlayStation 4 but a Digital Edition PlayStation 5 fear not – for most games that will simply involve you downloading the game from the PSN store when it is released.

Transfering your save games and progress will depend on what game it is.

For singleplayer games that support the transfering of save games you will simply enable your PlayStation account’s cloud storage for save games and then access it from the PlayStation 5 with the option to download all game content stored in the cloud to your new machine.

EA’s sports titles will allow you to carry your Ultimate Team, MyTeam etc over to the next-gen version, and back again, but progress in career mode etc will not transfer.
