In the Sea of Thieves, players will live out their wildest dreams as pirates seeking adventure across the ocean and scoring plenty of treasure. Their seafaring adventures won't be embarked on alone, as they can band with friends or adopt a fluffy animal companion to share the experience with.

Pets were fully introduced to the action-adventure game in September 2019 and have seen new types and species added, including the recent Season 12 content update. We've assembled our favorite fluffy animal companions to guide pirates in learning how to get Pets in Sea of Thieves.

How To Get Pets In Sea Of Thieves?

Pirates will learn that life on the high seas isn't all that glamorous and can sometimes get quite lonely, especially when their fellow mateys aren't around. Luckily, their seafaring adventures won't be as depressing as pirates can adopt a pet to accompany them across the Sea of Thieves.

These animal companions are a wonderful addition to any pirate Ship and can make the treacherous journey across the ocean less frightening. Currently, seven types of pets are available for pirates to adopt, including the recently added Owls as part of the Season 12 content update.

Let's look at all the pet types and the species available currently at the Pirate Emporium in Sea of Thieves:

  • Cats: Maus, Ragamuffins, and Wildcats
  • Dogs: Alsatians, Inus and Whippets
  • Monkeys: Barbarys, Capuchins and Marmosets
  • Parrots: Cockatoos, Macaws and Parakeets

Only Foxes and Owls are currently in-game pet types, and no species is listed for them. Collector's Pets are animal companions equipped with unique effects or outfits that can't be equipped with a Pet Outfit, regardless of their Pet Type or species.

If they want to adopt a pet and make them a home aboard the Ship, they can head to the Pirate Emporium from the Main Menu screen or by locating it above the Order of Souls at various Outposts. They can navigate the emporium's inventory by finding the Pets tab and browsing through the various pet types and species available before confirming their selection by paying with Ancient Coins.

To equip the pet to their pirate character, they must find the Pet Chest, which can be accessed from the Ship or near the Pirate Emporium. They can also equip Pet Outfits, which can be purchased from the Pirate Emporium, name their animal companion, or unequip their pet from the Pet Chest.

There are a few important things to note about how Pets can be utilized and how they behave in-game, with the first being that they can be placed and launched from Cannonballs. And don't worry; they will find their way back to their owner and teleport to them once they've reached their final location.

Equally important is that Pets can be cleaned in Sea of Thieves, especially if their fur has traces of soot after being fired from a cannonball. They will react to pirate emotes, sea shanties, and the ringing of the Ship's Bell but will run away from combat, fires, gunshots, lightning, ship collisions, and skeletons.
