Disco Elysium: Can You Romance Kim & Other NPCs

Given the myriad of avenues, paths, and choices you can decide to bring your cop down as he regains his memories and sense of self in Martinaise, romance isn’t one of them, surprisingly enough. Now, that’s not to say you can’t try your sad and lonely darndest with someone like Klaasje - you can actually take a certain other NPC out on a date if you play your cards right.

No, it’s not Kim.

In this guide, we’ll cover how to take an NPC out on a date and get as close as you can to romancing someone in Disco Elysium. We’ll also confirm whether love could ever really blossom between Precinct 41 and 57’s finest detectives.

How to Go on a Date in Disco Elysium

There are two chances for Harry to openly flirt and make certain intentions known, whether hand-in-mouth or not. The first chance to shmooze up to someone is right at the beginning of the game after you peel yourself off the Whirling-in-Rags floor and see Klaasje outside on the hostel’s second floor. 

Speak to her and you’ll be prompted with a Challenging Suggestion skill check to try “The Expression” on her and make a bold statement of physical desire. While humiliating, failing this check is one of the funnier moments in Disco Elysium, and truly sets up your expectations of how royally you can mess an interaction up, romantic or not.

Take Lilienne on a Date

Your second and actual chance to take someone out on a date comes later, from Day 3 at the earliest once the Fishing Village becomes accessible:

• To the east of the Washerwoman and her free residence, you’ll find a fishing pier and the sword-wielding Lilienne. 

• If your Suggestion stat is high enough, you can flirt with her readily, to the point where you can head out on what results in a very platonic walk up the beach in Land’s End.

• If you play your cards right, you can earn Lilienne’s Standart 115mm Sabre as a reward for a good date. 

The sword can be used to help with a certain encounter with Ruby and with helping Soona construct a radio tower on the King’s statue on the roundabout in Martinaise.

Can You Romance Kim Kitsuragi?

You wish. Sadly, as convincing as some fanfiction and art depictions of the two spending intimate time together can be, the closest you’ll come to intimacy with Kim is by internalizing the Homosexual Underground Thought to learn more about his sexuality. Even so, taking the time to obsess over someone else’s sexuality is actually one of the worst thoughts in Disco Elysium, so maybe don’t sweat it. Oh, but you could probably get him revved up on the topic of automobiles, chatting cars really gets his engine running.
