Disco Elysium: Where To Sleep On Day 1 and How To Sleep For Free

Bills are the only thing keeping you from a good night’s sleep on your first day in Martinaise.
Disco Elysium: Where To Sleep On Day 1 and How To Sleep For Free

Disco Elysium will push you to your penny-pinching limits on your first in-game day as you figure out a place to sleep while paying back Garte, the hostel manager. Turns out, waking up in the Whirling-in-Rags nearly as naked as the day you were born along with a total loss of memory isn’t the only thing you should be worried about on Day 1, you’ve got bills to pay too.

In this guide, we’ll explain how to navigate Day 1’s most difficult challenge and also how to sleep for free in Martinaise, before you become some form of hobocop sleeping in a dumpster.

Where to Sleep on the First Night in Disco Elysium

There’s only one place to sleep on Day 1 and Day 2, and that’s in the Whirling-in-Rags, so you’ll need to pull your socks up and pay Garte compensation for the damages you’ve caused and the staying costs you’ve already incurred - a stinging 130 Real. You can try to negotiate this down by either threatening Garte with an Authority check or by attempting to run away via Savoir Faire.

Should neither work, it’ll be time to hit the streets to make some cash.

How to Make Money in Disco Elysium

There are a number of options available to make enough money on Day 1, given that you play your cards right and pass the right skill checks. Here’s what you can do to grab enough money to pay Garte back:

  • Explore Martinaise and check containers for spare change. It all adds up.

  • Before 23:00: Find and equip the yellow Frittte! tare bag and pick up empty bottles and cans to exchange for cash in the Frittte! kiosk.

  • Before 22:00: Speak to Siileng and pass a challenging Rhetoric check to ask for 10 Real.

  • Go to Roy’s Pawn Shop near the water lock to sell any quest items for decent cash.

  • Speak to Joyce Messier and pass a Volition check to ask her for money (She’ll give you the full 130 or negotiated amount if you succeed.)

Get Kim’s Help

Should you be too proud to do the above or not have the best build to carry out those checks, don’t stress too much. if you’re struggling into the late hours of Day 1 with barely any cash to your name, Kim’s got you covered:

  1. Wait til 22:00 on Day 1.

  2. Interact with the speech box over Kim’s icon on the bottom left.

  3. Kim will prompt you to convince Garte to let you stay free of charge.

  4. Garte won’t have it, but it will give Kim the idea to reluctantly sell off some wheel spinners he confiscated.

  5. Take them to Roy’s and pawn them off, then return to Garte and pay off your damages and night’s stay. You can then head up to sleep.

How to Sleep for Free in Disco Elysium

If you’re not keen on the money-making grindset and far from a capitalist, then you’ll be happy to know that on Day 3 when the Fishing Village is accessible to you, you can find a spot to sleep for free:

  1. Head west over to the Fishing Village via the now traversable water lock.

  2. Speak to the elderly Washerwoman, sitting outside a shack to her north.

  3. Ask “Where could someone stay around here?” and she’ll offer up the same shack out of goodwill to the RCM.

  4. Accept the key, and from here onwards you can choose to stay there for free each night moving forward.

Kim might be a bit unimpressed with your choice of stay, but it’s a lot easier than scraping 20 real together each day, money that could be better spent on quest items.
