As you first enter the Hollow Halls, you'll have to square off with some various skeletons and skeleton dog enemies. Once you've dispatched them back to the underworld, you'll notice that there's a large barrier gate blocking your continued exploration of the Hollow Halls.

To open the Hollow Halls barrier, you need to collect runes. In this instance, there are two runs you should simply swing a melee weapon at to claim. The first is floating in front of the gate between the two elevated areas, but the second is hidden on a metal platform just behind that first one.

Once you're at the level of the first one and above ground level, turn and look for the metal platform and the grappling hook attachment spot. Jump up there, deploy your grappling hook, and then swing at the rune to open the barrier.

If you look closely at the top image in this article you'll notice two lines in the barrier, with one illuminated. An illuminated line is a rune you've already collected, and the total indicates how many you still need. These are sometimes located in hidden spots like this, and runes can also be attached to enemies you'll have to defeat to open later barriers.
