It's almost time to travel through time with Magic The Gathering.

Note - The Magic The Gathering Doctor Who set has now been released

Doctor Who is fast approaching its 60th anniversary in November of this year, and a whole host of celebrations are taking place to acknowledge it. There's the long-rumored (and apparently delayed) Fortnite crossover, there are multiple books and audiobooks being released to celebrate the franchise, there are reportedly crossovers with multiple other TV shows coming and there's the actual sixtieth-anniversary television specials that are penned by veteran of the franchise Russell T Davies. In addition to this, Magic The Gathering is doing a Universe Beyond set that is all about the beloved science-fiction franchise, and we've got everything we know collected in one place for you.

Magic The Gathering Doctor Who Release Date

The Magic The Gathering Doctor Who decks will release on October 13 this year, materializing before The Lost Caverns of Ixalan (which is the final main Magic The Gathering set of this year). That's a month before Doctor Who's official 60th anniversary, which takes place on November 23rd this year. This means that you'll be able to get your hands on these decks before we see David Tennant and Catherine Tate's return to the franchise.

Magic The Gathering Commander Decks

TARDIS

Four different Magic The Gathering Commander Decks will be released for Doctor Who Universes Beyond, and all of them focus on different elements of the franchise.

You've got the Timey-Wimey deck, which is a reference to a quote from the 2008 Tenth Doctor Episode 'Blink', and appropriately focuses on the Tenth Doctor and Rose as the two characters on the deck box.

There's the Masters of Evil, which features Missy, the Daleks, and The Cybermen as the characters featured on the deck box. The name of the deck is a reference to the fact that Missy is an incarnation of the classic Doctor Who villain, The Master.

The third Magic The Gathering commander deck for Doctor Who is the Blast from The Past deck, which is called that due to the fact it focuses on classic Doctor Who as a franchise more than the show since 2005. This deck features the Fourth Doctor (played famously by Tom Baker) on the deck box and features several other classic Doctor Who characters inside.

The fourth and final Magic The Gathering Doctor Who commander deck is the Paradox Power deck, and your guess is as good as ours as to why the deck is called that. This deck features the Thirteenth Doctor and Yaz on the deck box, and will likely focus on more recent Doctor Who characters.

How Much Will The Magic The Gathering Doctor Who Decks Cost?

Each Magic The Gathering Doctor Who Commander Deck will set you back £50, or $70. For that, you get a 100-card deck, a 2-card collector booster sample pack, ten double-sided tokens, 1 life tracker, and 1 deck box. You can also buy all four of the decks for £170.

What are Universes Beyond in Magic The Gathering?

Universes Beyond are decks that are all associated with cards completely unrelated to the usual Magic The Gathering lore, with franchises such as Fallout, Lord of the Rings, Final Fantasy, and Assassin's Creed joining Doctor Who in this category.

Will The Doctor Who Commander Decks Introduce Any New Mechanics?

Yes! There are a few new mechanics being introduced to Magic The Gathering through the Doctor Who commander decks. Firstly, there's the Doctor's Companion, which allows the player to have two commanders if the other commander is the Doctor.

There's the new ability word known as Paradox, which triggers whenever you play a card from somewhere other than your hand, and finally, there's the new card type known as Saga, which has numerous different effects based on how many counters it has overall.
