When Does House Of The Dragon Take Place?

Learn all about when the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon takes place and the timeline that viewers can expect.
When Does House Of The Dragon Take Place?

There has been a ton of hype building up for the House of the Dragon prequel series from the Game of Thrones universe. Now that the latest full trailer has dropped for the world to watch, many may be wondering when exactly House of the Dragon takes place.

Though HBO hasn't given any true specifics on the timeline of the show, there has been some discussion from showrunners and production. On top of their information, it's important to remember that the prequel series that comes out on August 21, is based on a book series just like Game of Thrones was. That means plenty of prior information for us to look at.

House of the Dragon - What is the timeline of the prequel series

Based on the Fire & Blood books, this series should take place around 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones or A Song of Ice and Fire. Some estimates have it near 300 years before what most viewers are used to in the universe, but that isn't as common. Other estimates have placed the timeline at 150 years as well.

Regardless of the exact years, the show will be nearly two centuries before we see the Stark family as we come to know them in the first episode of Game of Thrones. But this story isn't really about House Stark at all or the War of the Roses that set the main plot in motion. Instead, the House of the Dragon will focus on the Targaryen.

The prequel series to Game of Thrones will take place 100 years after the conquest of Westeros by Aegon I Targaryen. He was the one to leave Valyria and take Westeros with his own dragons. He effectively started Kings Landing and the great houses as we come to know them. More importantly, the Iron Throne was under his control.

After 100 years of Targaryen control and reign, House of the Dragon will show us exactly what went wrong with the once powerful family. They are pitted against each other in a civil war that will no doubt eventually lead to the events prior to the War of the Roses.

There is obviously much more that goes into the story of Westeros beyond House Targaryen, such as the Night King. However, we have no idea where those stories will be in tandem, or if they will touch on that side of the story at all.
