After almost a three-year break, Battlefield is finally making a grandiose return in 2021.
Called Battlefield 2042, the new Battlefield game will see players fighting in massive 128-player battles, across seven larger-than-ever-before maps.
Battlefield 2042 is absolutely colossal in every aspect, from vast maps to huge battles, exciting old and new modes, and more. There will without a doubt be a lot of content for PvP fans to explore and dive into once the game launches.
But what about those players who enjoy single-player campaigns and story more than blasting other players online?
Let's check out the game's story and the possibility to have a single-player campaign.
What's the story in Battlefield 2042?
As the name suggests, the game is set in the near future. The year is 2042 and the world has undergone several huge global crises which drastically changed the world as we know it, both in geopolitical terms and in terms of geography and climate.
It all started in 2031. with sea levels rising exponentially due to runaway climate changes, resulting in global economic crisis, food and resource shortages, several wars and massive refugee crisis.
Catastrophic climate changes, chronic food shortages, and other global issues, eventually resulted in the Second Great Depression, which has started in 2034. Just a year later, the European Union officially disbanding in 2035, following Germany’s collapse.
With countries falling apart, regions of the world becoming uninhabitable, and food becoming increasingly scarce, the world has become overpopulated by a new category of people, the Non-Patriated.
These people are of different origins, from different parts of the world and they all have one in common, they have no motherland.
With now wandering around the world, many of them have become mercenaries, participating in proxy wars between the US and Russia, a conflict that escalated following a sudden space debris storm which created a "Kessler Effect" causing 70%+ of all orbiting satellites to malfunction and crash to Earth, resulting in over 100,000 deaths, skyrocketing food and oil prices, and more.
In this drastically changed world, the game starts.
Will Battlefield 2042 have a single-player campaign?
Unfortunately, despite having an interesting story premise, it has been confirmed that the game will not feature a single-player story campaign, rather it will be fully focused on multiplayer aspects of the game.
The story of the game will be told through in-game events, trailers, challenges, details scattered across vast maps, special mini-missions, and other additional content, but there will be no single-player modes.
Battlefield 2042 is slated for release on 22nd October 2021, and it is coming to Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC.
