How to get Sword of Morne in Elden Ring

The Grafted Blade Greatsword or the Sword of Morne contains a surprising reference to Game of Thrones. Here's how to get the weapon in Elden Ring.
How to get Sword of Morne in Elden Ring

Elden Ring features a good arsenal of weapons and shields that can aid you in defeating bosses and enemies during your journey in The Lands Between. However, while some weapons are relatively straightforward to obtain, others are only dropped after defeating bosses.

Likewise, the Grafted Blade Greatsword, better known as the Sword of Morne, can be acquired by defeating Leonine Misbegotten at Castle Morne. Although this boss battle is one of the most demanding challenges in the game, you can always return to the location once your stats, gear and weapons are stronger.

This guide details where you can find the weapon and general tips on defeating the boss and the weapon's surprising Easter Egg in Elden Ring.

Where is the Sword of Morne located in Elden Ring?

The Grafted Blade Greatsword (or Sword of Morne) can be obtained at Castle Morne in the Weeping Peninsula in Southern Limgrave.

Once you are at Castle Morne, you will need to find the optional boss, Leonine Misbegotten, along the shores southwest of Castle Morne.

You can fast travel to Beside the Rampart Gaol Site of Grace and navigate southwest towards a tower with a wooden bridge beside it. You will see the boss arena to the left from a distance as you can take a ladder from the tower down onto the shoreline.

Upon arriving at the castle’s shoreline, some Spirit Jellyfish are in the area. Ignore this and continue looking for the boss arena gate. Once found, enter through the mist to start the battle with Leonine Misbegotten.

How to defeat Leonine Misbegotten in Elden Ring?

This optional boss is noted for their overwhelmingly aggressive combat skills, making blocking and guarding quite tricky. Equipping the Ash of War: Barricade Shield will help mitigate most of the boss’ attacks; however, it’s best to dodge them when you can.

There are multiple opportunities to land quick elevated attacks, especially when the boss performs leaping attacks, leaving them defenceless. But of course, you can add more attacks, but the main objective during the boss battle is to conserve stamina and as much health as possible.

Using this strategy, you’ll be able to survive the onslaught and, after some time and patience, defeat Leonine Misbegotten. Followingly, they’ll drop 3,800 Runes and the Grafted Blade Greatsword (Sword of Morne).

How to upgrade the Sword of Morne in Elden Ring?

After the boss drops the sword, the item will be added to your inventory, from which you can have a look at its description and monstrous stats.

Besides the staggering 40 Strength stat and 21 Weight, it also comes with the Oath of Vengeance skill, which raises all attributes for a certain period when activated.

Only Somber Smithing Stones can be used to upgrade the weapon, which can either be purchased from the War Counsellor Iji or in farming spots like the Limgrave Tunnels, below Temple Quarter and Castle Morne. Ashes of War cannot be equipped with this weapon.

What is the Sword of Morne’s Game of Thrones Easter Egg?

Let’s discuss what’s possibly the best Easter Egg in Elden Ring, which references the fantasy television series, Game of Thrones. The series is based on the Song and Ice and Fire novel series written by George R. R. Martin, who contributed to Elden Ring’s narrative.

By looking at the Grafted Blade Greatsword and its description, it shares similarities with the series’ most notable device, the Iron Throne. Both were forged using multiple swords; better still, the description alludes that the weapon was brought to The Lands Between by “a lone surviving champion from a country now vanished.”

We can debate whether this “country” might be The Seven Kingdoms, but Martin’s involvement in Elden Ring and the neatly planted Game of Thrones Easter Egg is no coincidence. Whether Martin planned it or was included on the developer’s end, it’s certainly quite the homage to one of television’s most popular series.

Nevertheless, with the Grafted Blade Greatsword in your possession, it will aid you in some of the game’s more crucial battles with bosses and dungeons. The fight with Leonine Misbegotten will be brutal, but the reward is well worth it.
