How to throw the ball away in Madden 22

Sometimes the play isn’t there and you have to get rid of the ball quickly in Madden.

Like almost any other sports game out there, sometimes things don’t go your way in Madden 22

Whether it’s the defence guessing your play call correctly or a receiver falling down, there are times when you as the quarterback needs to make a decision. Sometimes, you can choose to run on your own and pick up any yardage you need for a first down or touchdown. This can be risky, though, as a defender could hit you, causing a fumble. Luckily, you can always quarterback slide to avoid this.

The other option you can do is throw the ball away. This allows you to reset the action and while you lose a down, it’s the safest route for your offence. However, many players aren’t sure how to do this, as it’s not traditionally laid out in the controls. Luckily, the process to throw the ball away in Madden 22 is as easy as pressing any other button.

The process of throwing the ball away is extremely simple in Madden 22. The only thing players need to do is press down on the right analogue stick on both Xbox and PlayStation controllers. This will make the quarterback proceed with throwing the ball away and killing the play.

However, there are some advanced mechanics with doing this. The first is making sure players don’t get called for Intentional Grounding. This is a penalty that loses the player another down and moves them back five yards. The basis for the penalty is when the quarterback stays in the pocket and throws the ball nowhere near a receiving player.

To avoid this penalty, players either need to roll out of the pocket and then throw the ball away. If they stay in the pocket due to pressure from the defence and throw the ball away, you’ll likely be called for Intentional Grounding unless a receiver is right near the sideline where you threw the ball. The problem is, you don’t really get to choose where the ball goes after you press down on the right stick.

In short, you need to have room to roll out of the pocket if you want to throw the ball away or ensure that you have two players on the sideline. However, the last option isn’t recommended.
