Fortnite is a game with two modes: “Save the World”, which was the game’s initial iteration and “Battle Royale”, which was added later as a standalone release. The latter is a PUBG-style multiplayer free-for-all, in which either individual players or teams of players fight to remain the last one standing.

What’s the genre?

Co-op sandbox survival or battle-royale, depending on the mode.

When was it released?

July 25, 2017.

What platforms is it on?

Microsoft Windows, macOS, Playstation 4, Xbox One

Is it an esport?

At the time of writing Fortnite esports is in its embryonic stages, but there have been a few positive signs so far. Most notably, TSM and FaZe Clan have already started forming rosters. The esports potential of battle royales in general is something that is yet to be fully explored, with the well-publicized efforts to turn PUBG into a watchable competitive spectacle receiving mixed reviews. However, when a genre of multiplayer game is this popular, some form of esports competition often arises.
