Next Tomb Raider announced - Release date, game developers, more

Square Enix has now officially confirmed that a new entry in its critically acclaimed action-adventure series, Tomb Raider, is in development. It's been over four years since Shadow of The Tomb Raider was released, and fans have been itching for the next Lara Croft adventure ever since.

The announcement, which may surprise many fans, comes via Tomb Raider's official Twitter account, which revealed not just the next Tomb Raider but also the game engine it's using. At the time of this writing, the details on Lara Croft's upcoming adventure are pretty low, though the announcement video does reveal some key information that fans should know about. With that said, here's everything we know about the next Tomb Raider game.

Who is developing the next Tomb Raider game?

Square Enix confirmed that Crystal Dynamics is returning to make this next-gen Tomb Raider game. This is a bit surprising since the last Tomb Raider was made by Eidos Montreal.

Crystal Dynamics is also currently co-developing Xbox's The Perfect Dark reboot, which if the recent rumours are any indication is also still in early development.

What game engine is the next Tomb Raider game using?

The most surprising but important info revealed in the new Tomb Raider game announcement video is the fact that it's being developed on the Unreal Engine 5.

Recent Tomb Raider games such as Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider used Crystal Dynamic's proprietary game engine called the Foundation Engine. The shift to Unreal Engine 5 presents unique opportunities and could majorly overhaul the visual fidelity, UI, and gameplay systems of the new Tomb Raider game.

When will the next Tomb Raider game launch?

The next Tomb Raider is still pretty early in development, and the announcement was basically for hiring and revealing the partnership with Epic Games. Speaking of Epic Games, there is a possibility that the next Tomb Raider game would be exclusive to the Epic Games storefront.

As mentioned before, Crystal Dynamics is also currently working on the Perfect Dark reboot, which is reportedly rumoured to release not until 2024. Recent Tomb Raider games took three years to develop, and with that in mind, alongside the Perfect Dark rumoured release window, the next Tomb Raider game might not release until 2025-26.

The next Tomb Raider game is still a long way off though the confirmation of a new game in this iconic globe-trotting adventure series should keep fans excited for the time being.
