Biomutant review roundup: Beautifully ambitious yet flawed

Set in a post-apocalyptic world filled with mutant animals, Biomutant, from developer Experiment 101 and publisher THQ Nordic, has arrived on Xbox and PlayStation consoles, as well as PC. Many gamers might want to know if Biomutant is worth their time, which is where critic scores come into play. Let's take a look at what the Biomutant reviews are saying in our roundup, as well as the average score the game has achieved thus far.

Biomutant Metacritic review average

Since Biomutant is out on PC, Xbox and PlayStation, there are three average review scores to look at. Since Biomutant currently runs only at 1080p on the PS5 due to some technical issues, it isn't surprising that the PlayStation review average is a bit lower than Xbox and PC.

While most critics agree the art direction makes Biomutant beautiful, many believe it is a flawed open-world title. Others praise the game, so it truly is a mixed bag when it comes to Biomutant reviews.

Biomutant review roundup

In this section, we take a look at what some of the top critics have to say about Biomutant. Please note full credit goes to the publications featured, as well as their quotes used to summarize what the critics say about Biomutant in this review roundup.

GameSpot - 6/10

"While it might not always hit the mark, Biomutant is an ambitiously flawed game from a small studio, and the games industry could always use more risky endeavours like this one."

IGN - 6/10

"Biomutant has a lot of the building blocks of a top-drawer action RPG but its cookie-cutter approach to objectives and puzzles starts feeling very repetitive very early on."

GameRevolution - 9.5/10

"Considering Biomutant’s delayed and seemingly troubled road to release, I’m blindsided by just how good it is. Experiment 101 has clearly been afforded the time to see its vision through, something which is unfortunately far too rare in the cutthroat gaming industry.

"I did not expect this to be one of my favourites of the year so far, let alone one of the most enjoyable open-world games I’ve ever played. A true modern gaming miracle."

PC Gamer - 60/100

"I enjoyed it with a big pained grin much like the horrific smile of my spherically domed horse. I grit my teeth through the painful narration and groundless progression, if only to see what kind of fucked up muppet it would throw at me next. Biomutant is an extravagant cartoon diorama unlike anything on PC, it's just not much fun to play or listen to."

Heavy - 8.8/10

"Biomutant is a bit rough around the edges, but it largely succeeds as a fresh action RPG experience that shouldn’t be ignored."

Destructoid - 8/10

I had a lot of trouble tearing myself away from Biomutant, and a lot of my grievances didn’t really surface until I’d finished it and had time to digest. Before that, I was absorbed in exploring its well-designed world, plumbing ruins, collecting dopey looking mounts, and dressing like I just survived a landfill explosion. There are some unwanted mutations in its genes, but they're covered in fur and easy to overlook.

GamesRadar - 3/5

"It's such a shame, because there is a great game in here. Biomutant's world and its characters are wonderful and brilliantly silly, but these elements clash against some of the more serious elements of the core story.

"The intensely formulaic and repetitive moments distract from the brilliant ones that'll have you nodding in approval, or laughing at its bizarreness. And it all comes down to the fact it doesn't really know exactly what it is or wants to be. If you got Biomutant in a sale, you wouldn't be sad, but as a full-priced offering, it feels too confused to easily recommend."
