The Ancestor Spirit boss battle can be pretty gruelling to complete, factoring in its unique combat skills and the challenging puzzle to solve beforehand. This guide explores where to find and defeat this boss and solve the puzzle in Elden Ring.
Where to find the Ancestor Spirit boss in Elden Ring?
The Ancestor Spirit boss is located in a remote arena in the underground area of the Siofra River. This area was previously explored when looking for Blaidd the Wolfman, who got stuck here after your last meeting.
Before encountering this celestial boss, you will need to solve a puzzle involving eight pillars found near a flight of stairs at Hallowhorn Grounds. The closest Site of Grace is the Siofra River Bank, northwest of Hallowhorn Grounds; you can fast travel to the Site from your World Map.
How to solve the pillar puzzle in Elden Ring?
Once you have arrived at Hallowhorn Grounds, you must solve the pillar puzzle by lighting them in a particular order before starting the boss battle. Start by lighting the pillar in the middle of the river, which will light up a corresponding pillar at the temple steps.
The locations of the other pillars are marked off on your World Map, which should make it easier to find them. As such, these are the locations of the remaining pillars as follows:
- The second pillar is west of the first pillar at the Siofra River Bank
- The third pillar is on a small island east of the first pillar
- The fourth pillar is atop a cliff on the eastern side of the underground area
- The fifth pillar is north of the fourth pillar, close to the Worshipper’s Woods Site of Grace
- The sixth pillar is west of the Worshipper’s Woods Site of Grace
- The seventh and eighth pillars are beside each other north of the Worshipper’s Woods Site of Grace
Once all the pillars are lit, you can head to the temple at Hallowhorn Grounds, where you’ll find and interact with an animal carcass. This carcass serves as a teleport, which will lead you to a golden seal door to pass through to the boss arena.
How to defeat the Ancestor Spirit boss in Elden Ring?
Defeating the Ancestor Spirit boss is slightly easier than most bosses in Elden Ring. Although it's a relatively straightforward battle, we advise not to use a summon early in this battle as the boss has an ability that can quickly destroy them.
It’s worth noting that equipping weapons, skills and spells that inflict Hemorrhage or bleeding effect will take away large amounts of HP with a few strikes.
For example, equipping the Bloody Slash: Ash of War can deal significant damage to the Ancestor Spirit but make sure you have an additional Flask of Cerulean Tears if you take on too much damage.
Keep looking out for three specific moves that the Ancestor Spirit can hit you. The first is a dive attack that jumps into the air three times before lunging towards you for a charged attack.
Avoiding this move is possible by either dodging to the left or right or rolling towards the boss when the attack happens. This will place you behind the boss, where you can land several strikes before it counters your attacks.
The next attack uses its antlers to make a sweeping motion which can knock you if you roll into the attack. You can dodge this by rolling underneath the boss or rolling away entirely away from the boss.
The final move is the Ethereal Flame, which will launch a targeted attack by gushing blue and white fire from its mouth. Again, positioning yourself away from the line of attack will prevent you from getting trapped by the flames.
With enough patience and carefully countering the Ancestor Spirit’s attacks, you should successfully defeat the boss with relative ease. Afterwards, it will drop 13,000 Runes and the Ancestral Follower Ashes as rewards.
