Virtua Fighter X esports Project has been announced by Sega to honour the company’s 60th anniversary.

Shown during their Tokyo Game Show presentation, Virtua Fighter X esports Project was debuted with a trailer showcasing competitive players.

It’s unclear exactly what the project will involve, although an official description (translated by Nibel) states: “The gold standard of gaming is finally back in esports. Announcing the Virtua Fighter x esports Project.

“Virtua Fighter, the world’s first 3D fighting game in 1993, will be rebooted in Japan first to celebrate Sega’s 60th anniversary. Stay tuned for more news on this one.”

It’s unclear if this means a direct reboot of the original Virtua Fighter is on the horizon, although many will be likely disappointed now if this isn’t the case.

The last mainline entry in the series was Virtua Fighter 5 back in 2006 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, so another instalment is certainly overdue.
