The investigations into the mysteries of an infection plaguing The Elderwood have reached a point where a minor detour occurs and, unsurprisingly, involves Tamala. Subira's suspicion has reached an all-time high, and she decides to determine the truth of her presence in this area with a very important task at hand.
Palians must step away from the investigations to learn whether Tamala has been telling the truth or hiding something that she doesn't want Subira or The Order to find out. This guide hopes to address this mystery by providing the objectives and a detailed walkthrough for the One Step Behind quest and determining whether they were on the right path or misdirected.
Palia One Step Behind Quest Objectives List
Near the end of the Something Fishy quest, Subira mentions that she has grown even more suspicious of Tamala despite assisting Palians in an earlier quest and making her Potion Store available for supplies. While Subira disliked her behavior and how she inserted herself into their investigations of The Elderwood, Subira requested to find out what Tamala was doing in The Elderwood, thus receiving the One Step Behind quest.
Palians will take a little detour from their investigations to dig deeper into Tamala's ulterior motives and hit quite a roadblock upon their discoveries. Before we detail the events of this quest, below we've listed the quest objectives to help Palians follow along and help them complete the One Step Behind quest:
- Find traces of Tamala in the Elderwood.
- Keep following Tamala's trail.
- Stay on Tamala's trail.
- Enter the mysterious cave.
- Investigate the mysterious cave.
- Head towards the cave exit.
How To Complete The One Step Behind Quest In Palia?
After returning to Subira and listening to her thoughts and feelings regarding Tamala, she'll give Palians their next quest, One Step Behind, which tasks them with locating her and learning what she's been up to since arriving at The Elderwood. However, having no idea where exactly Tamala may be, they must find clues by following a trail left behind by Tamala starting from the southern exit of the Elderwood Central Stables, leading out towards the Deep Woods.
The clues are marked on the World Map, which should be identifiable on their in-game compass as they progress deeper into The Elderwood, but they meet a familiar face in the Deep Woods. Sifuu can be found in the Deep Woods, where the Beast of the Elderwood is what brought her to this area, but she was unable to find this mystical creature.
As she warns Palians about Tamala and the infection plaguing the area, she hands over a Protection Charm that has been protecting her (Sifuu) during her quest to find the Beast before setting off to track more clues. Palians need to get back onto the trail to find Tamala by following the clues, which lead them to a mysterious cave near The Fallen Aquaduct, which they can enter.
Once inside, they can begin investigating this mysterious cave by finding clues littered throughout, including a "suspicious" letter and abandoned notes to complete an objective before leaving the cave. However, they are halted by the appearance of Tamala who isn't happy to find them here nor discovering this mysterious cave.
Tamala promptly informs them that they should've minded their own business, citing that they could've asked, which, when pressing Tamala, provided an interesting response that she would've considered being upfront with them. She reveals that Subira has "it all wrong" on her being the mysterious "intruder" behind the protocol overrides and subsequent mishaps in The Elderwood; she informs them that she cannot allow them to spread her business everywhere before pulling out a Runestone and muttering a few words sealed with a kiss.
This "teeny" spell will prevent them from reporting back to Subira, adding that she has taken the liberty of locking them inside the cave, thus ending the One Step Behind quest. Palians will earn 20 Renown, and their next quest, Like a Shiprunt, is to find an escape route out of the cave and deal with this "teeny" spell that Tamala has placed on them.
