The GentleMinions trend on TikTok started gaining traction on 1st July 2022 after the release of Minions: The Rise of Gru. The film is a prequel to the popular Despicable Me movie franchise and the origin story of the film's protagonist Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), set in the 1970s.

While there are many variations, the GentleMinions TikTok trend typically sees large groups of moviegoers attend the film's airing while dressed up in suits chanting the lyrics "I count money" from the song Rich Minion by Yeat.

Some TikTok videos have also shown mass groups of teens in suits slowly descending from an escalator while making the classic Gru hand gesture. As a result, the near-cult status of the trend has been regarded a major player in the hit success of Minions: The Rise of Gru movie.

Why Are Theatres Banning The GentleMinions Trend?

Many cinemas and theatre establishments have since banned the trend, prohibiting moviegoers intending to watch the Minions: The Rise of Gru movie from wearing formal attire. While the GentleMinions trend appears harmless, its ban follows reports of some moviegoers taking things a bit too far, which included them engaging in violent moshing and throwing bananas during the film.

However, attempts to block fans from engaging in the GentleMinions trend have not been successful, as enthusiasts quickly find ways to circumvent the system. Indeed, some moviegoers have arrived wearing formal attire underneath their regular clothes while hiding bananas in rather inconspicuous locations.
