Asmongold reveals reason why he started to stream on Twitch

Asmongold is among one of the most popular streamers on Twitch, boasting a colossal fanbase of over 2.3 million followers and 200 million views.

He recently celebrated his 10th anniversary on Twitch since starting his streaming career in November 2011. However, many fans were wondering what inspired him to stream in the first place. More recently, Asmongold opened up about the heartbreaking reason he started Twitch streaming.

Asmongold reveals Twitch origin story

During a Twitch Livestream on 22nd November, Asmongold confessed that he got into streaming because his mom got sick.

"My mom getting sick forced me into streaming because I couldn't leave the house because I had to take care of her. And this was like in 2012. So, that's why I started streaming and making YouTube videos," Asmongold said. 

Followingly, Asmongold explained that he couldn't get a job or even go to school due to having to look after his mom at home. "Ironically, most people say they didn't start streaming because of money, but I did," the Twitch star added.

Asmongold continued to explain that his teeth were also starting to fall out, and he couldn't afford to go to the dentist. "They were getting so bad that it was just terrible," he said. After eventually going to the dentist, he was quoted nearly USD 50,000 to have his teeth fixed.

"I went home with that bill, and I wanted to kill myself," Asmongold said before continuing to say, "and I was like, there is no way I can ever get above that."

At the time, Asmongold was only 25 years of age and thought that it was the end of his life.

"Then, what I ended up doing was I started streaming because I knew I couldn't pay for it with the money I made on YouTube. That's why I started streaming, so in a way, I'm glad my teeth fell out," Asmongold concluded.

Although Asmongold's reason for streaming was centred around money, it's good to know that his heart was in the right place.

It's also clear from the tone of his voice that he hasn't forgotten his humble beginnings.
