Twitch streamer Mira banned for nudity?

Popular Russian Twitch streamer, Mira, has been banned from the Amazon-owned streaming platform after she allegedly showed sexually suggestive content from her Instagram page live on her stream. The Twitch star typically streams under the "Just Chatting" category and boasts over 322,000 followers.

According to the StreamerBans bot, this is the first time that Mira has been banned from the streaming platform. While the exact reason for her ban was not indicated, the StreamerBans bot noted that she is still a partner, which suggests that the ban is not permanent.

Mira subsequently posted on Twitter, where she featured the photo that got her banned. In her post on 4th October, she said: "My bad Twitch for showing dis (sic) pic on stream. [I will] remember to add a thong next time to qualify for hot tub | pool | beach streams."

Why was Twitch streamer Mira banned?

Although Mira did not explicitly indicate that she was banned for showing nudity or sexually explicit content (which is obviously not permitted on Twitch), the photo that she attached to the Twitter post certainly insinuated this. In the photo, we can see that Mira was unclothed and surrounded by trees, with a partial view of her buttocks. The picture did not show any other sexualized features.

Mira did not indicate how long her suspension will last, but given that this is her first offence and considering prior suspensions for similar reasons with other streamers, we suspect that she will have her channel reinstated before the week is out.

Naturally, the ban prompted several Twitch community members to criticize the Amazon-owned streaming service for their apparent double standards.

"They give you [an] indefinite ban for a mistake when other streamers have softcore makeout sessions and striptease shows and it’s accepted or they get [banned for] 3 days," one Twitter user said.

Mira later responded to the comment, and said that she received a "timeout." Mira further added, "I wouldn't call it a mistake on my part. I deliberately showed dat (sic) picture as it's not intended to be sexual especially in the light of what's already allowed on Twitch" before calling for Twitch's rules to be revised.

Popular ASMR and hot tub streamers, Kaitlyn "Amouranth" Siragusa and Jenelle "Indiefoxx" Dagres, were both previously hit with several bans for sexually suggestive content, the latter of whom eventually got permabanned for repeated offences on the platform.

Although Twitch has not shied away from slamming the ban hammer on infringing streamers sexualizing their content, it has been criticized for its unfair moderation in the past, particularly regarding the controversial hot tub streams. This eventually prompted Twitch to launch a dedicated "hot tub" section, where they stated: "Being found to be sexy by others is not against our rules."

We'll leave it to you to decide whether or not the ban was warranted, or whether Twitch's rules indeed require some revision. Be sure to let us know what your opinions are on Twitter.
