ESL To Host Overwatch Tournament At Gamescom
Published on June 13th, 2016
Overwatch might only have been available to the public for a short while, but there's no denying that it's become an important part of the eSports scene almost immediately. As if to prove it, ESL has announced that it will be hosting an Overwatch tournament this August. The eSports host has revealed the Overwatch Atlantic Showdown, a tournament taking place during the week of Gamescom featuring the eight best Overwatch teams, four from North America and four from Europe. Four open qualifiers will begin on 27 June, followed by regional and then later a final qualifier to decide just who the best teams are for the tournament proper - because let's face it, at this point we're still yet to figure out just which teams will be king. ESL will offer up $100,000 in prize money, making it the first six-figure tournament for Overwatch. We can likely expect to see more tournaments for Overwatch announced over the following months, but there's more that needs to be done to the game for it to truly become a permanent fixture for the eSports scene.
