Clayster on finally winning again and the powers of Simp and Abezy

Following their historic win at the Call of Duty World League Finals in Miami, Florida, GINX Esports TV had a brief chat with James "Clayster" Eubanks of eUnited to discuss how it feels to finally win again and teaming with superstars.

It’s been 1,400 days since you last did this - I know it’s such a generic question, but how are you feeling? What's going through your head in those final moments? It's about time right?

At the end of the match, when we knew we had won and there was just a couple of kills left to clean up on the map, we started getting a bit, like, "ohhhh...". And then it's just indescribable. It's pure, ecstasy, pure bliss. It's validation for what we do, and for me to still be doing this.

It's really hard to put into words.

When did you realise you were going to win the event? Was it not until the very final seconds, maybe when you had finally got to the grand final through winner's bracket?

We didn't know we had won until the last 10 seconds or so of the third map in the second best-of-5. We were keeping our eyes straight forward, playing it map-by-map, making sure we didn't get ahead of ourselves. We just had to play our hardest and we didn't think we'd won until there was 10 seconds left.

Were you worried at all when you lost that first BO5? What are the conversations like after that happens?

The first best-of-5 had very, very similar maps to when we played them in the winner's bracket semi-final, and they had obviously prepared, watched the VODs and fixed their mistakes on how we beat them the first time. So, going into the second best-of-5, I can't think of a better word but we decided to 'big dick' them on their really good maps.

Seaside Hardpoint and Frequency Control are two of their best maps and we were like "screw it, it's the last best-of-5, let's see if our practice has paid off on these maps and screw the statistics". We think we're better, and that was basically it.

The vibes were a little shot in the first series and we were all able to come together and be like "hey, put it all out there and leave it all on the line".

Are you expecting Gen.G to be your biggest competitor heading in to the Call of Duty World Championships?

I think there's about five teams that can win CoD Champs. Gen.G is definitely one of them, OpTic, 100 Thieves, FaZe, LG. There's a lot of other really good teams. We're not thinking that anyone's our specific competition, we're just going to play the match we have to play.

We’ve seen a lot of young players come good this year, such as Abezy, Dylan, Envoy etc. and now Simp is an MVP. Why do you think this is? Is it the game, the seasonal format?

I think us going to 5v5 allowed 16 more players to come up and allowed us to expand past the known pro pool. Some of those known pros didn't get on pro teams and it showed that these young kids are hungry, they want it, they're not going to get complacent and they're going to try their hardest.

It's just become more acceptable to bring on these younger kids and teach them.

Finally, this event has really proved the importance of a strong sub duo, if it wasn’t already obvious. Why do you think this is, and do you think you have the best sub duo in the game?

Simp and Abezy are without doubt the best Saug duo in the game. Those two have some of the most extraordinary talent that I've ever seen in my entire career. They're willing to listen, willing to work, willing to get better and they don't think they're the shit or that they're right all the time.

And they're really good people, too. That matters a lot to me, to be able to get along with my teammates and reach them on a personal level. They're phenomenal, man, I can't say enough good things about them.

Clayster and eUnited will be in prime position for a strong showing at next month's Call of Duty World Championships in Los Angeles, California. The big question is, which teams and players can completely change their lives at the most important event on the Call of Duty calendar?
