New WoW Token Restriction To Preserve Game’s Integrity

Blizzard is making one important change for those who purchase WoW Tokens with Gold.

As World of Warcraft players celebrate the game’s 19th anniversary and enjoy the Guardians of the Dream update, Blizzard is making a chance to the infamous WoW Token system. For most heroes of Azeroth, the chance should not be an issue at all, but as with everything on the internet, not everyone is happy. Here’s what you need to know.

WoW Token Gold Purchase Rule

You can purchase WoW Tokens with in-game gold and use them to purchase game time or even expansions. This will, of course, remain the same. However, Blizzard has put in place one restriction in order to preserve the integrity of the game.  The new restriction was announced by Blizzard’s community manager, Randy “Kaivax” Jordan, who explained on the official forums:

“Players will no longer be allowed to purchase a WoW Token from the Auction House or the in-game Shop for gold if they have not spent real money to purchase and consume at least 30 days of game time (a “Time Limited License”) since 2017.”

The change comes into effect on 21 November 2023, following the WoW server maintenance period. It does not affect the consumption of existing WoW Tokens. Those who are now blocked from purchasing a WoW Token with in-game gold will have to purchase 30 days of game time with real money. This can be done on any World of Warcraft account across the player’s Battle.net account to qualify.

While not everyone is happy with this change, it makes a lot of sense in order to maintain a healthy WoW Token market and, importantly, throw another hurdle in the way of bots.
