The day has finally come! The long-awaited remaster of Diablo 2 is here and armies of fans are once again ready to take a stand against Prime Evils and their minions, whilst spending countless hours searching for better loot.
The gates of hell have been opened again --quite literally, in fact -- after many players reported that their GPUs were getting insanely hot while playing Diablo 2 Resurrected. These high GPU temperature issues have been reported across Reddit, forums and social media; and it is not a new issue either.
The problem was present during the beta testing stages and it has seemingly prevailed after it reappeared in the final version of the game.
How to fix high GPU temps when playing Diablo 2 Resurrected
The overheating issue appears to affect Diablo 2 Resurrected players playing on a wide range of graphics cards as well. These players reported that their GPUs were getting abnormally hot when playing Diablo 2 Resurrected.
"I'm on an RTX 3080. No idea how many frames it's pushing but the GPU gets HOTTT," said Reddit user u/mushlafa123. "Hotter than it gets in other games. Sitting around 80 degrees. I turned the power down to 80% and it went down to like 75, but still pretty hot," the user continued.
Other players have shared similar experiences, saying that Diablo 2 Resurrected was melting their GPUs.
Another Redditor, u/MidnightFireHuntress, shared their frustrations and said: "Saw people posting about this in Discord and wanted to ask here, how high are your temperatures getting in D2R? My liquid-cooled GPU/CPU was hitting upwards to 90 DEGREES." The user added: "Not even Cyberpunk on ultra gets my system this hot."
Although Diablo 2 Resurrected has brand new graphics, with new 3D models, new animations, new effects and much more, it doesn't seem to justify why a 20-year old game would melt the latest high-end GPUs, especially those from the RTX 3000 series.
So, is there a solution for hot GPUs? Ultimately, the problem lies in the game's poor optimisation and that's something that will need to be fixed on Blizzard's side.
Unfortunately, Diablo 2 Resurrected isn't a well-optimised game at the moment. As a result, it causes GPUs to get insanely hot. Currently, there is only one workaround, which was suggested by certain players online and that's to cap your FPS to 60.
Apparently, some players are reporting that this will drop GPU temps significantly and while it is not ideal, at least it won't cause your expensive GPUs to have a meltdown. You certainly would not want that to happen during the chip shortage era that we are currently living in.
