And while undoubtedly a huge number of players have already played Diablo 2 before, there's also a significant number of those who are experiencing the world of Diablo for the first time with Diablo 2 Resurrected.
Although 20 years old, Diablo 2 still holds many mysteries for players to find and unveil, like the famous secret cow level and other easter eggs hidden around the game.
And while some mysteries have been resolved decades ago, many players still arent sure if there's some hidden meaning behind them, or are left there just to purposely play games with players, without any functionality.
One of those secrets is Diablo 2 Resurrected's Chat Gem and the message "Gem Activated". Let's find out what it means!
Diablo 2 Resurrected Chat Gem "Gem Activated" message - what does it mean?
The story of the Diablo 2 Resurrected Chat Gem is as old as the original Diablo game.
The Chat Gem is placed between the game's chat and the game itself when you open the chat.
Players have quickly discovered that the gem is actually interactive and that you can click on it, upon which it will change and the message will appear: "Gem Activated". Clicking once more would change it to "Gem Deactivated".
Naturally, this mysterious message has quickly occupied the minds of many players, as they wanted to get to the bottom of the story behind this enigmatic gem and the meaning of the "Gem Activated" message.
Many have tried to figure it out, but no one has come to any plausible explanation of its purpose, yet people were convinced that there's some hidden meaning.
People soon discovered that if you continuously click on the gem, eventually there will be situations where a message will read either "Perfect Gem Activated", or "Moooo,", further adding to the confusion.
Developers intentionally distracted players by saying vague things like: "The chat gem is working as intended."
A full decade has passed and no one was able to find any function behind it, until finally, during Gamescom 2011, Jay Wilson, the lead designer of Diablo III, decided to end players' suffering and finally offer the answer on what's the purpose of the Chat Gem in Diablo 2.
In an interview with GameTrailers, when asked about the Chat Gem, he said: "I will definitively say, the chat gem did nothing" in regards to its functionality in Diablo II."
So there you have it - the Chat Gem and the "Gem Activated" message have no other purpose other than to mess around with players. Mind you, Blizzard might have changed this for Diablo 2 Resurrected, we don't yet know this, but given that they said that they have no intention to make unnecessary changes, this probably stays true for Diablo 2 Resurrected as well.
I know it's a bit disappointing, but that's the answer.
