Do You Need PS Plus To Play GTA Online On PS4 and PS5?

GTA Online is available on many different consoles. Grand Theft Auto V has been out for a very long time, and it was first released on both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. GTA Online still has a very loyal audience that has transferred their saves from the PS3 all the way to the PlayStation 5.

One thing that has developed over this time is how Sony allows players to access its online services. With that being said, most online games on the PlayStation consoles require PlayStation Plus for you to play online games on their consoles. So, do you need PS Plus to play GTA Online for PS4 and PS5? We go over that below.

Do I Need PS Plus To Play GTA Online On PS4 and PS5?

PlayStation has restricted many of its games' online capabilities to be behind a paywall known as PlayStation Plus. So not only do you need to buy a base game, you will often need PS Plus to play that game online.

PS Plus is a subscription service that allows those who have a PS4 or PS5 to play games online and to get exclusive deals as well. But the key here is playing games online aspect that we are concerned about.

To answer the question, yes, you do need to buy PS Plus to play GTA Online on a PS4 or PS5. There really is no way around this. Please do not confuse PS Plus with GTA+, which is a different service altogether.

Will GTA Online Ever Be Free-To-Play Without PS Plus?

The answer is probably not anytime soon. In the past, Rockstar's GTA Online has been free to play on PS4 and PS5 in the past. For a month or so, players were able to play GTA Online without paying for PlayStation Plus.

But those are uncommon occurrences, and players should not bank on something like that happening again. Sales and things of that nature happen pretty randomly, and it could be years until the next time GTA Online will go online for free on PS Plus.

So right now, the best bet for GTA Online players on PS4 or PS5 is to purchase a PS Plus subscription. Thankfully, the subscription is relatively cheap, and as soon as it is purchased, GTA Online is available to play online.
