Diablo 4 The Pit: How To Unlock & Portal Location

First up, a bit of lore text hinting at The Pit of Artificers in Diablo 4 Season 4, just to get the blood flowing:

There are rumors that there are strange varieties of ore deep within the network of dungeons crisscrossing the north of Sanctuary, perfect for crafting exceptionally-made armor using secret Horadric techniques. However, the horrors that lay in wait for intrepid wanderers seeking to unearth these riches are unspeakably terrible.

So, to unlock The Pit, you must be in World Tier 4 difficulty. Here, you will receive a brand-new priority quest to complete a Tier 46 Nightmare Dungeon. Once you manage to complete it, you will start getting Runeshard drops from endgame activities such as:

  • Whisper Bounties
  • Nightmare Dungeons
  • Legon Events
  • World Bosses

Once you've collected Runeshards, you can head on over to the Obelisk, located in the town of Cerrigar in Diablo 4 Season 4, to open up The Pit. That's it; you've unlocked The Pit in Diablo 4! Now, you have 10 minutes to slay enough monsters, fill up your bar, and you'll see a red portal spawn, which transports you to the final boss area.

Keep in mind that your first death removes 30 seconds from the timer, the second death removes 60 seconds, and all subsequent deaths remove 90 seconds from the timer, so try to stay alive!

The faster you complete a Pit run in Diablo 4, the more rewards you will acquire. The higher the tier, the higher the rewards as well. You will find random, powerful loot of iLevel 925 by finishing off the boss, as well as Masterworking materials.

In a group, only the player who opened The Pit will have a chance at receiving the coveted Stygian Stones, used to summon Tormented Echos.

Diablo 4 players can work their way through 200 tiers of The Pit of Artificers, which has high reliability due to its random nature. The rewards from The Pit in Diablo 4 Season 4 are meant as the pinnacle of endgame progression, so expect a huge challenge at later tiers. Blizzard explains:

After enough monsters are slain, a portal materializes, transporting you to the boss’s arena. Slay the boss before the timer expires to earn coveted Masterworking materials… and the next brutal tier of The Pit. If you can manage to kill the boss with time left on the clock, the benefit increases. With 4-6 minutes to spare, you skip a level and unlock an additional Tier of the Pit. Killing the boss with 6 or more minutes to spare grants you two additional Tier unlocks. The Pit has 200 total levels of difficulty to try and conquer, if you dare face the challenge.

The video below showcases a tonne of Pit of Artificers gameplay in Diablo 4 Season 4, including boss fights, how the timer works, and much more.

That's everything Diablo 4 players need to know about The Pit, including how you can unlock this brand-new endgame activity in Season 4, the loot you can expect to find as rewards, and how you blow through the Tiers.
