Learn about the Diablo 4 Open Beta update and the issues/troubles players can expect when it kicks off on 24 March at 09:00 PST.

Diablo 4 Rogue Overview: Is it a Good Class?

The Rogue class in Diablo 4 is ideal for players who want a fast-paced play style with tons of versatility and options in terms of enemy engagement. The Rogue boasts a high damage output with the use of two one-handed melee weapons (Swords/Daggers) and a ranged weapon (Bow/Crossbow) at the same time as well as various movement and skill options that allow it to dominate in both close and long-range battles.

Best Diablo 4 Rogue Build Is The Rogue A Good Class
The Rogue class is excellent for players who want a versatile yet powerful class. Just be wary of some of its weaknesses and you'll become unstoppable. (Picture: Blizzard)

However, there are a few caveats to consider regarding this class. The Rogue is fairly squishy, with no powerful defenses aside from Dark Shroud, which has a long cooldown time, so it won't save you all the time. The Rogue is also a tricky class to play, as its strengths rely on how you position it on the battlefield. And lastly, the Rogue's abilities are powerful but conditional, meaning that if you don't set up for your powerful attacks by using crowd control or debuffs, you can limit your damage output and leave yourself wide open to retaliation.

But of course, these drawbacks can be mitigated and worked around, and that is exactly what our build is here to do. So let's take a look at our pick for the best Rogue build in Diablo 4.

Best Diablo 4 Rogue's Skills Build: Relentless Fury

We've called this build the Relentless Fury Rogue to symbolize the Rogue's overwhelming and unrelenting ability to dish out tons of damage and stay moving as you build up more and more powerful attacks. Thanks to your dual blades and a bow or crossbow, the Rogue never gives enemies a moment to rest or recover until they eventually fall prey to your fury, especially when using the skills picked to make the rogue even more powerful.

Rogue Skill Type Skill Name Upgrade
Basic (Combo Generator) Forceful Arrow Fundamental
Core Skill (Combo Spender) Barrage Improved
Agility Skill  Dash Disciplined
Subterfuge Skill Dark Shroud Subverting
Imbuement Skill Poison Imbuement Blended
Ultimate Skill Shadow Clone Supreme

If you're unfamiliar with the skill names in Diablo 4, then the table listed above might make a little more sense after we've elaborated on each of their descriptions below. You can find each of their upgrades listed as well with the help of the Maxroll.gg website

  • Forceful Arrow - Fire a powerful arrow at an enemy, dealing 25% damage. Every 3rd cast makes the enemy Vulnerable for 2 seconds.
  • Enhanced Forceful Arrow - Every 3rd cast of Forceful Arrow additionally has a +15% increased Critical Strike Chance.
  • Fundamental Forecful Arrow - Forceful Arrow Knocks Back the enemy if they are Close. If they collide with an enemy, both are Knocked Down for 1.5 seconds.
  • Barrage - Unleash a barrage of 5 arrows that expands outwards, each dealing 26% damage. Each arrow has a 20% chance to ricochet off an enemy up to 1 time. Ricochets deal 40% of the arrow’s base damage.
  • Enhanced Barrage - Barrage’s ricochet chance is increased to 100% for arrows that damage a Vulnerable enemy or Critically Strike any enemy.
  • Improved barrage - Every 3rd cast of Barrage makes enemies Vulnerable for 2 seconds.
  • Dash - Dash forward and slash enemies for 47% damage.
  • Enhanced Dash - Enemies damaged by Dash take x20% increased Critical Strike Damage for 5 seconds.
  • Disciplined Dash - Dash Slows enemies it hits by 30% for 3 seconds. Any enemy already Slowed will be Stunned for 2 seconds instead.
  • Dark Shroud - Surround yourself with up to 5 protective shadows. Gain +8.0% Damage Reduction per active shadow. Each time you take direct damage, that damage is reduced and a shadow is consumed.
  • Enhanced Dark Shroud - Dark Shroud’s shadows have a 10% chance of not being consumed.
  • Subverting Dark Shroud - Each active shadow from Dark Shroud grants you +3% increased Movement Speed.
  • Poison Imbuement - Imbue your weapons with lethal poison. Your next 2 Imbueable Skills deal Poison damage and apply up to 105% Poisoning damage over 5 seconds.
  • Enhanced Poison Imbuement - Poison Imbuement’s Poisoning Duration is increased by 1 second.
  • Blended Poison Imbuement - Critical Strikes with Poison Imbued Skills deal x30% increased Poisoning damage.
  • Shadow Clone - Your shadow mimics your actions for 15 seconds.
The shadow deals 60% of your damage.
  • Prime Shadow Clone - You are Unstoppable for 5 seconds after casting Shadow Clone.
  • Supreme Shadow Clone - Your Shadow Clone deals an additional 20% of your damage.

All of these skills are focused on doing more than one thing (which is the essence of the rogue class). Some will boost the rogue's offensive abilities and defensive abilities, while others will soften up your enemies by making them vulnerable, and finally, some will give you room to move safely around the battlefield and wreak havoc on your enemy's defenses. Poison imbuement and your barrage abilities are especially useful as they deal lasting and wide damage, meaning even beefier enemies will fall while you safely attack from a distance of your choosing.

Diablo 4 Rogue Specialization System Priority

Next, we'll take a look at one of the more exciting features that the Rogue class has at its disposal, its unique Specialization ability. This skill allows the Rogue to choose one of three abilities to "specialize" in and can be swapped for any of the other two on the fly.

Best Diablo 4 Rogue Combo points for Building combos and releasing powerful core attacks
We recommend the Combo Points Specialization for its ability to unleash devastating Core skill attacks. (Picture: Blizzard)

These three abilities are:

  • Combo Points: Your Basic Skills now Generate Combo Points. Certain skills consume Combo Points for additional effects.
  • Inner Sight: Attack marked enemies to fill up your Inner Sight gauge. When it's full, gain unlimited Energy for 4 seconds.
  • PreparationUnlocks at level 30, which wasn't reachable in the preview version.

For now, we recommend going with the combo point specialization as your priority choice as building up combo points to unleash powerful variants of your Core skill attacks, which can change the tide in almost any battle. For more on the Specialization feature, then check out our guide on the Rogue Specialization ability in Diablo 4

Stats Priority For Diablo 4 Rogues

When it comes to the stat prioritization and which stats should take focus when leveling, for the Rogue class in Diablo 4, we've gone with the following descending order:

  • Dexterity: +0.1% Skill Damage per point.
  • Strength: +0.1% Resource Generation per point.
  • Intelligence: +0.02% Critical Strike Chance per point.
  • Willpower: +0.25% Overpower Damage per point.

Please note: This priority list assumes your items will have enough resistance for your current difficulty level.

The stat priority focuses on attack and defense first, then movement and other abilities. (Picture: Blizzard)

Because the Rogue focuses on essentially spamming abilities until it can unleash powerful slate cleaners, any additional stats and affixes should focus on increasing your base damage, +damage reduction, and pretty much anything else that can synchronize with your skills, especially imbuement, as Critical hits with Poison Imbuement are guaranteed to melt enemies and your Energy replenishment since its the lifeblood of the Rogue class and you'll need more and more as you progress through the World tier difficulty levels.

Lastly, keep in mind that you can also get a permanent stat increase for all your stats for each of the Altars of Lilith that you find and interact with within the game. Of course, you can also increase individual stats by leveling up and simply equipping better gear.

Best Gems For Rogues in Diablo 4

The ideal Diablo 4 Gems for your Rogue build should supplement your skill pick and fill in certain gaps where your character may be lacking. In this case, it would especially be in damage reduction to counteract the Rogues squishy health bar. Below is our gem selection and the reasoning for placing them in certain positions.

  • Ruby - Provides resource generation when placed on weapons.

Best in Slot Items For Diablo 4 Rogues

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide you with a complete list of the best-in-slot equipment for a lethal Rogue build in Diablo 4 at this time since we are unsure of the kinds of loot that will drop throughout the mid-end game portions of the game.

Best Diablo 4 Rogue Build More to come on In slot items
While we still don't have a full list of the gear available to the Rogue, make sure your gear focuses on damage reduction, damage output boosts, and energy recovery before anything else. (Picture: Blizzard)

However, we can say that for the build we've gone for, you should focus on any slots that increase your damage reduction, critical hit chances, energy restoration, and overall damage output. Movement speed also helps, but is negligible if you have these other stats sorted, so make sure the In Slot items focus on these areas first.
