Wondering about exactly how seasonal characters will work in Diablo 4, what progress carries over from the Eternal Realm, and what happens to your seasonal characters at the end of a season? Then we’ve got you fully covered!
There’s been a lot of confusion and questions about Diablo 4’s seasons, creating a new character each season, and what progress is lost/kept. This guide will explain it as clearly as possible, so let’s begin.
Diablo 4 Unlocks & Progress For Seasonal Characters
First and foremost, you will need to complete the Diablo 4 campaign once on any character (Eternal or Seasonal Realm) to enjoy the seasonal content. The first Diablo 4 season is called “Season of the Malignant” and features Malignant Hearts as the main new mechanic, alongside a questline that takes place after the main story.
Seasonal characters in Diablo 4 do get some progress and unlocks carried over from the Eternal Realm, including the following:
- The option to skip the Campaign.
- Your Mount available immediately.
- All previously discovered Altars of Lilith unlocked, and the corresponding Renown for them.
- All previously discovered areas of the map revealed, and the corresponding Renown for them.
In the example calculations below, we assume the player has found every Altar of Lilith and completely explored the Fractured Peaks region on the Eternal Realm.
- 77 Areas Discovered = 385 Renown
- 28 Altars of Lilith Found = 280 Renown
- Kyovashad Waypoint = 20 Renown
Based on the calculations above, you will receive 685 Renown preloaded for Fractured Peaks. Blizzard did note that from 18 July 2023, you will have to log in with a character from the Eternal Realm so that its progress can be logged on your account for seasonal characters.
Diablo 4 Seasonal Character Content
Seasonal characters in Diablo 4 have some specific content to enjoy, not available on the Eternal Realm. This includes the following:
- New questline featuring NPC Cormond.
- Season 1 Battle Pass
- Season Journey feature
- New Boss
- New Dungeons
- Malignant Hearts mechanic
Yes, you can only access the Battle Pass, free and paid versions, with a seasonal character.
End of Diablo 4 Seasons & Character Move
So what happens to your seasonal character at the end of a Diablo 4 season? Well, all the progress your character made will be kept. Your seasonal character simply transfers over to the Eternal Realm automatically and includes all the items you’ve collected and everything in your seasonal stash.
Yes, you can use your seasonal character on the Eternal Realm once that specific season ends forever, or at least until the inevitable AI uprising occurs and dooms us all. The one thing that does not carry over to the Eternal Realm once a season is complete is the season-specific feature. For season one, this is Malignant Hearts, which will be lost once a season ends.
