As players make headway through the current season of Diablo 4, there are plenty of things you'll need to keep in mind to stay alive and progress. One in particular is the use of the game's various effects and abilities that will not only make your life easier during battle but also can become cornerstones of your build.

The Fortify effect, in particular, is essential to any build as it grants you the durability to tank damage you may not have seen coming or give you the longevity needed to jump right into the action without dying. So in this guide, we'll break down everything you need to know about the Fortify effect in Diablo 4.

Diablo 4 - How The Fortify Effect Works

Let's start by exploring how the fortification mechanic operates in Diablo 4. The Fortify ability is composed of two main elements: Fortify generation and Fortify usage. These aspects work in tandem, and when you activate or employ Fortify, it provides a 10% reduction in damage taken.

Here's how this system functions: In Diablo 4, as players accumulate more Fortify meter (represented as a red line around your health, which generally increases over time) than they have health, the effect becomes active (the damage reduction).

To simplify, suppose you've amassed 2,700 Fortify on your health bar, but your health capacity is 4,200. When you sustain damage, your health diminishes normally until it falls below 2,700. From that point onward, all subsequent damage taken is reduced by 10%.

However, your Fortify meter diminishes in sync with your health. So, if you're healing faster than you're generating Fortify, you'll lose the damage reduction. To maintain the benefit, it's advisable to reach the maximum Fortify level (matching your max health) before facing significant damage.

Diablo 4 - How To Generate Fortify

Now, let's focus on the smaller mechanism that contributes to accumulating this meter, known as Fortify Generation. To build up your Fortify meter and receive a slight advantage during more precarious situations, Diablo 4 players can equip specific abilities that generate it. They can also make use of applicable Aspects, and particular core character classes like Barbarians and Necromancers will accumulate Fortify at an expedited pace.

Certain pieces of equipment, such as sapphires embedded in your armor, can also help by further reducing the damage you take while under the effect of Fortify. By prioritizing the enhancement of Fortify, you can increase the damage reduction from 10% to 40% or more.

This notable difference can substantially influence your character's survivability. On the flip side, your Fortify meter can also decrease, so to prevent this from happening, regular engagement in battles is essential to staying 10% less vulnerable to anything the game throws at you.
