Just like its predecessors, Diablo 4 features a gambling mechanic. It is your chance to get some gear upgrades by spending Obols and get some shiny loot drops in the process. But the Purveyor of Curiosities works a bit differently than previous titles in the iconic ARPG franchise.
In this article, we explain how you can unlock the Purveyor of Curiosities gambling feature in Diablo 4, how you can get more Obols, the gambling cost per item slot, and more.
Update on 17 March 2023: We've updated this article with the latest information on gambling and how you can get more Obols in Diablo 4.
Unlock Gambling in Diablo 4: Purveyor of Curiosities Location

Unlike the Blacksmith and other essential vendors/NPCs, there is no need to complete a quest in order to unlock gambling in Diablo 4. Instead, you will only need to find the location of the Purveyor of Curiosities vendor.
The first time you will encounter the Purveyor of Curiosities is around level 10, when you reach the central hub of the Fractured Peaks area, called Kyovashad. This vendor is located South of the main waypoint and one street below the Blacksmith.
You can find Purveyor of Curiosities vendors in each major town/city of Diablo 4.
Diablo 4 Obols: How To Get More

Unlike in previous mainline Diablo titles, you won't need to spend Gold on gambling in Diablo 4. Instead, Blizzard has implemented the Obols rare currency, much like they did with Diablo Immortal.
You will want to get more Obols in Diablo 4 to spend on gambling for a chance at some nice Legendary gear or even rare gear for upgrades. To get more Obols, you can complete the following activities in Diablo 4:
- Complete local events in the world of Sanctuary.
- Cleanse Cursed Chests in Dungeons.
- Cleanse Cursed Shrines in Dungeons.
- Complete specific quests that have a Cache as a reward.
At the time of writing, it looks like the maximum Obols a player can carry on a character is 1,000. This means that you should spend Obols when you are close to the limit, even if you are still leveling. You can't save every Obol until the max level...
Diablo 4 Gambling: Obols Cost Per Item Slot

With Obols in hand, head to the Purveyor of Curiosities and start spending them! The Diablo 4 item rarity/quality you will get is random and can be either Magic, Rare, or Legendary. It appears that you can't get Unique items from gambling.
Check out the table below showcasing the item types and cost in Obols to gamble for one in Diablo 4 at the Purveyor of Curiosities.
Item Type | Cost in Obols |
---|---|
1-Handed Axe | 50 Obols |
1-Handed Mace | 50 Obols |

You might be wondering what a Whispering Key is. Well, this item is supposed to unlock a Silent Chest in Diablo 4. At the time of writing, we are unsure if Whispering Keys will be worth the Obol cost, as Silent Chest rewards have not been revealed.
If you don't get an upgrade for the item type you spent Obols on, you can always salvage them in Diablo 4 for some crafting/upgrade materials.
