With many of us looking forward to the release of Diablo 4 on 6 June 2023 (2nd June for Eary Access), many players want to know what we can expect from this new adventure into the world of Sanctuary. One thing we can expect is a unique NPC in the game called the Uccultist, and for those unfamiliar with them, this guide has you covered.
Below we'll be taking a look at everything we know about the Occultist in Diablo 4. We'll take a look at how to unlock them, as well as the Occultist's function in Diablo 4.
Update on 20 March 2023: We've updated this article with the latest information about the Occultist and its important functions such as imprinting Legendary Aspects in Diablo 4.
How To Unlock Diablo 4 Occultist
While we know quite a bit about the Occultist's role in Diablo 4, one thing everyone is unclear on is how to unlock them. As it currently stands, we don't know how to unlock the Occultist in Diablo 4; however, likely, they will only unlock after the main NPCs, such as the Blacksmith and Alchemist, etc. are unlocked.

We also aren't too sure if this NPC will be available in one specific spot or across every main town in the game. Regardless, you can expect this article to be updated as soon as more information on how to unlock the Occultist becomes available, so be sure to check back here frequently.
Diablo 4 Occultist Functions
Now, one thing that should be clear is that the Occultist offers players some real firepower, and it honestly makes sense that it's unlocked later than other NPCs. So let's take a look at how the Occultist functions in Diablo 4 and what they offer.
The first two abilities the Occultist wields are Legendary Aspect extraction and Aspect imprinting. The first simply means that when you come across a Legendary Aspect on a piece of gear you don't need, the Occultist can extract it for you (at a hefty cost). This aspect is then stored in your inventory, where you can see its bonuses and which pieces of gear it can be reapplied to.

The second is the ability to imprint Legendary Aspects from either the Codex of Power or an extracted aspect onto any rare or legendary piece of gear. This turns a rare item into legendary and marks it as "Imprinted." Unfortunately, Imprinted Aspects cannot be extracted, or traded, so keep that in mind.
The next ability the Occultist has is to craft Sigils, which, when consumed, will transform a dungeon into a Nightmare Dungeon. This will increase the danger of the dungeon for sure, but it will also likely increase the amount of loot and loot quality of the dungeon overall (this ability only applies to dungeons, though, not Strongholds). In addition to this, the Occultist can also allow you to salvage Sigils, meaning you can take some of the lower tiers, more common sigils, and salvage them (destroy them) for more useful or rare items.

Last but not least, the Occultist can Enchant your gear, which allows you to reroll the affixes on your gear for better ones with better stats. You can also replace a single affix on an item with a random one that will give you better stats. This is one of the most useful functions of the Occultist, as it solves an extremely prominent issue in previous games; having a great affix on an unwanted piece of gear.
