Does Diablo 4 Have a Secret Cow Level?

Let's start this off with an iconic quote from Blizzard: "There is no cow level." It has become a sort of running joke for well over a decade now, and as most fans of the Diablo franchise know, there was, in fact, a Cow Level in Diablo 2 and two secret levels in Diablo 3. So will Diablo 4 have a Cow Level?

In this article, we discuss the possibility of a Cow Level in Diablo 4, how one could go about to unlock it, and what Blizzard's not-so-surprising comment on the secret level is.

Update on 8 November 2023: Players are still searching for a secret cow level in Diablo 4 but have made a lot of progress. Slaying 666 cows three times gets you the three items to unlock Forlorn Hovel!

Is There a Diablo 4 Cow Level?

We have a Cow Level in Diablo 2 Resurrected, and in Diablo 3, we have the secret Whimsyshire, aka the Pony Level. Also, in Diablo 3, during the Darkening of Tristram event, you can access the original Cow Level.

So will Diablo 4 have a Cow Level? While nothing has been confirmed (and never will be officially confirmed by Blizzard because that's just how the devs are), we are almost certain Diablo 4 will have a Cow Level, maybe not at release, but sometime in the future.

If it will take the form of an actual Cow Level, or if it will be something different like Diablo 3's Whimsyshire, remains to be seen. Diablo 4 does, of course, take a darker tone than D3, so it is not impossible that the game will have a secret, serious level filled with horrors...

Joseph "Joe" Piepiora, the Associate Game Director for Diablo 4, has previously said that dungeons provide "opportunities for us to touch back on dungeons that may have appeared in previous games" and even mentioned referencing lighter elements of Diablo. When asked directly about touching back on a Cow Level, the dev replied: "I don’t think there is a cow level?" and Naz Hartoonian stated: "There is no cow level."

Sorry, we just don't believe you!

Diablo 4 Cow Level: How To Unlock

At the time of writing, since Diablo 4 isn't out yet, there is no clear indication of how you can unlock the game's Secret Cow Level. We will update this section as soon as information becomes available.

We do believe that players will have to find some unique types of items, such as they did in the previous two games, for example, Wirt's Leg. Maybe, just maybe, we will have to find some other parts of Wirt to unlock a secret level in Diablo 4...you never know!
