In Diablo 4 Season 1, aka Season of the Malignant, the main new mechanic is the Malignant Hearts (let’s call them super gems) for players to acquire, alongside a questline that takes place after the main story. There is some progress that will carry over to your Seasonal characters, but there’s also a caveat.
Take this as a public service announcement for our Diablo 4 fans, as you will need to jump through one hoop to actually claim the Areas Discovered and Altars of Lilith progress on your Seasonal character.
Update on 24 July 2023: Don't forget to claim your Renown progress on Seasonal characters!
How To Claim Progress on Seasonal Character in Diablo 4
Progress, including map Areas Discovered (and the Renown attached) alongside Altars of Lilith found, does not carry over completely automatically. For example, let’s say you’ve taken a bit of a break from Diablo 4 until Season 1 starts on 20 July 2023 and haven’t played the game since 17 July. When you log on and instantly create a Seasonal character, you will not see your Altars of Lilith and Areas Discovered progress from the Eternal Realm show up…
Why is this happening? Well, before launch, Blizzard did not intend for this type of progress to carry over to the Seasonal realm. However, the developers listened to the community and implemented the feature with the Diablo 4 Season 1 update that goes live on 18 July 2023.
Therefore, from 18 July 2023, you will have to log in with a character from the Eternal Realm so that its progress can be logged on your account for seasonal characters.
To clarify, the system to carry over your progress (Areas Discovered and Altars of Lilith) from Eternal realm characters to Seasonal characters will only become active following the Season 1 update on 18 July.
It is well worth doing, logging in with all your Eternal Realm characters with the progress you might want to carry over. In the example calculations below, we assume the player has found every Altar of Lilith and completely explored the Fractured Peaks region on the Eternal Realm.
- 77 Areas Discovered = 385 Renown
- 28 Altars of Lilith Found = 280 Renown
- Kyovashad Waypoint = 20 Renown
Based on the calculations above, you will receive 685 Renown preloaded for Fractured Peaks! As a sidenote, remember there is no need to follow this process for Season 2 and beyond, as the system will then be sorted and in place permanently.

That’s everything you need to do to carry over your Areas Discovered and Altars of Lilith progress from Eternal Realm characters to Seasonal characters. Yes, it is a bit of a hoop you need to jump through, but you only need to do it once!
